A third consecutive away fixture proved a tough day in the office for Dronfield, who travelled to Malton and Norton with a couple of enforced changes to the starting XV. The home side started the stronger of the two teams and following a spell of pressure in the Dronfield half the scrum half dummied and went from 10 yards out to score the opening points of the game.
Dronfield were fronting up well in defence but too many penalties led to a further 3 points for the hosts, stretching their lead to 10-0. This seemed to spur the visitors on who then had a long spell of possession but failed to cross the white wash. Joe Farrell made no mistake with a penalty kick to reduce the arrears 10-3.
Malton and Norton finished the half with another spell of territory aided by Dronfield getting on the wrong side of the penalty count, but the defence held firm with George Thompson making a crucial tackle on the Malton no.8 from close range to finish the half.
The second half followed the same pattern as the first with Dronfield resolutely defending. On the 50 minute mark the hosts stretched their lead through a converted try 17-3. Dronfield then tried to play with ball in hand but struggled to capitalise on half breaks and good field position. A line break from Wyton through the middle of the park and quick forward play showed signs of a Dronfield resurgence but Malton & Norton held out. The hosts added a penalty late on showing their respect for the Dronfield defensive line. This would prove to be the final score of the game. 20-3.
The 1st XV are back at home next weekend after 3 weeks on the road looking to bounce back after a tough run of fixtures.
